Designing a house to be sold.

I have been watching The Block, an Australian renovation reality show, over the last few months. It has got me thinking; how would I design and decorate a house that would be sold?

The contestants on the show had a range of styles; vintage, retro style with pops of brighter colour, simple modern neutrals, high modern gloss black and white and industrial city chic.

To me, a lot of these homes felt a little too personalised and thought things like barbed wire pendant lights (although very cool) would not be to everyone's taste. Neither would oversized vintage posters or charcoal grey shag carpet.

Searching through my inspiration files I thought I would probably go with a classic yet contemporary look. This isn't necessarily my personal style but I thought a mix of classic clean lined furniture with nice textures and interesting neutrals would probably appeal to a wide range of buyers. Kind of a Sarah Richardson-Candice Olsen style?

But then again, maybe there is a market for something a little different?

So what kind of style would you use if you were designing a home for sale?

  1. Hi Anna

It appears I am casual come chic come elegant come beach come coastal kind of gal.

I love the look for formal but can not stand the thought of not one thing out of place and everyone sitting up like they have a rod up their..... spine!

I love a clean palette, and a clean house with little touches of colour, I love family and friends black and white photos on the walls, very little clutter but enough to say "welcome, come in and don't be afraid to sit down in my home".

I guess homes for sale should sell a realistic dream - not an unrealistic one.

(ps give me a beach house any day)

    great topic Anna

    have a lovely weekend

  3. I've just been through the process and it is brutal! I tried to keep my house clean, organized and neutral but with personal touches here and there. I kept our photos out. and I made sure the house smelled nice and fresh like cinnamon!

  4. Keeping the house clean is a definite must and so is de-cluttering! Great pictures for inspiration Anna!

I just had to tell you that the blogger "Queensland Girl" won the give away! http://queenslandgrl.blogspot.com/

I just blogged about it. She tweeted, followed, facebooked...it all paid off! I just used the random counter site to do the draw (that's who I used last time).

Thanks so very much for sponsoring the lovely give away! You are so sweet!

Best wishes for a wonderful week,
    Natasha.

  5. I think any house that looked like those photos would sell in a heartbeat. I think they say the lighter and brighter, the better. If I had dark colors, I'd probably paint, and stay fairly traditional.

  9. I was thinking about this very same subject over the weekend. We decorated our old house (without even realizing it) to sell it. Lots of neutrals and classic furniture. I guess we always knew it wasn't our "forever house". I'm having so much more fun decorating my current house because we plan to be here a while. No more playing it safe!
