Planning for outside - shades of grey!

When we decided to build a house there was never really any question what colour it would be. Both of us ('Mr Ethos') and I knew it would grey. It was just a matter of choosing what shade of grey.

I loved this navy/grey Queensland cottage, but wanted a warmer, deeper grey. Our gutter, fascia, verandah balustrade and window frames will definately be white to re-create that lovely definition.

The cottage above is high on the inspiration list with the warm grey tones and bright white trim. For Queensland we will be using a white roof for energy efficiency.

So, it seemed the exterior colours were pretty easy (although we've yet to narrow down actual colours). Next on the list was the door. It had to be coloured. And by coloured, I meant BRIGHT! Some of the colours considered were royal blue, emerald, yellow, mint and pink.

But the colour that stood out to me, and even 'Mr Ethos' when he really looked at it...was pink! Somehow, luck me(!), I get to have a pink door despite the fact there's a man in the house.

I've yet to find the perfect shade but will certainly share when I have some options!

  1. Lucky you! I always wanted a pink door since I saw this one (at the end of the post): http://decoraticablog.blogspot.com.es/2011/04/touch-of-pink.html

But yellow is also so happy and bright... :)

  2. Great choice, Anna - the pink is my favourite too (and I'm not usually a pink kinda girl!). It all sounds lovely :)

  3. Love all those coloured doors! Romy from the "Diary of a Hobart Housewife" blog recently painted her front door in a gorgeous shade of pink, you might like to have a look at it http://hobarthousewife.blogspot.com.au/2012/12/christmassy.html

We went for a lighter roof as well due to the heat loading. While I love the look of a dark roof, you do have to be practical sometimes.... the excess heat gain wasn't worth it in my opinion. xx

  4. Funny how chaps will consider pink....I had to tell my husband that it was magenta (really fuchsia pink) as that was the colour on his old school blazer and his school had indoctrinated him (and now our boys) into believing that magenta is the colour of valour, of blood spilt on the battlefield! I am besotted with how our pink door turned out yet it was a tad complicated as it wasn't as simple a choosing a colour from a swatch.....my painter ended up mixing it up on the doorstep and luckily it worked out....may have been a little worried! Your house will look gorgeous! Rx

  5. Anna, it sounds like a dream home to me! I don't think my husband would ever consider pink for a door - although I could always trick him into thinking it's a deep shade of red? Hmmmmm.... let the scheming begin!

  7. You're one lucky girl, Anna! Just imagine, you'll have your dream door color soon! Anyway, I think the best shade of pink that would complement the color of your sidings and roof is carnation. It goes really well with gray.
